Art and Design
At Saltdean Primary School, we know and understand that a high-quality art and design education will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As educators, we want the Arts to support children to become critical thinkers and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. Throughout their time at Saltdean, they will develop an understanding of how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of their local area and also the wider world.

Our Curriculum Intent: |
We want our curriculum, in all its breadth and depth, to prepare our learners not only for the calm waters they will visit, but also for the stormy and unfamiliar experiences they will also face on their journey. We want to give them the confidence that the destination of the journey is theirs to decide, but that they can always navigate home to Saltdean, their starting point and safe haven. |

What is an Artist? |
Saltdean Artists: o Show enjoyment and appreciation of Art & Design, demonstrating a passion and commitment. o See themselves as artists who have the confidence to express their individuality and imagination. o Show curiosity, think creatively and take risks. o Are able to develop, master and apply their skills in: drawing, painting, textiles, collage, printing, 3D work and digital media. o Review, modify and refine their artwork, with the ability to self-reflect as well as giving peer feedback. o Have a knowledge of a range of diverse artists and designers both locally and from different times and cultures.

Our Art curriculum design |
Our Saltdean 'Art & Design Voyage of Discovery' ensures pupils build on a progression of skills as they move through the school. Pupils experience a range of exciting Art & Design projects that develop their technique and understanding in drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, textile, 3D work and digital media, with many opportunities to work with a range of materials. Across year groups, children study great artists, designers and architects from around the world. Pupils are exposed to many artists from various backgrounds who are representative of gender and ethnicity. Children can draw inspiration from history as well as studying modern and local artists. At Saltdean, children are encouraged to take risks and explore their curiosity, we see Art & Design as an important way of developing these skills. In Reception and Year 1, children learn new art techniques through continuous provision and enjoy experimenting with different tools and media independently within the environment. Across our whole curriculum and within different subject areas, pupils value Art & Design and have many opportunities to respond creatively. Through our forest school and beach trips, children enjoy creating artwork projects outside. Pupils experience a wide breadth of Arts rich experiences that inspire new passions and hobbies. We have an ‘Arts week’, which showcases pupils work, exposes children to art opportunities outside of the classroom and builds partnerships within our local community. Children are proud of their Art books, which is a space to record, experiment and reflect as they travel through their artistic journey. Knowledge organisers support subject-specific vocabulary, which pupils use to evaluate their own and others work. In displays across the school and our Friday Flyer newsletter, children’s artwork is shared and celebrated. Pupil voice is very important to us, we have a fantastic team of Arts Ambassadors who are very passionate about raising the profile of the Arts in school and across the community. |
