Singapore Maths Uncovered!

Dear Parents and Carers,

As you may be aware, in 2016 Saltdean Primary introduced a new approach to teaching and learning in maths across the whole school. This was based on the changes to the National Curriculum whereby there is now a greater emphasis on developing children’s mastery. At Saltdean Primary, we use Maths-No Problem, which is a scheme based on an approach developed in Singapore.

We have received many positive comments from parents/carers who attended our previous maths evening in February and October 2017. We would like to give you another opportunity to gain a better insight into your child’s maths lessons at school. We are therefore inviting you to a Singapore Maths Open Evening on:

Wednesday 13th February 2019, 5.30 – 7pm

The evening will include the following:

  • Introduction to Singapore maths and Maths-No Problem;
  • Finding out about the resources, textbooks and workbooks we use in school every day;
  • Videos explaining different mathematical concepts;
  • ‘Lessons uncovered’ – workshops run by teachers, across different year groups.

Introduction to Singapore maths and Maths-No Problem

This insightful and informative introduction to the ethos of maths at Saltdean will begin at 5.30pm in the North Hall. This will last approximately 20 minutes and is perhaps one of the most important parts of the evening so please arrive promptly at 5.30pm to ensure you do not miss it! There is no need to book into this talk via parent view as there will be enough spaces for everyone.

‘Lesson Uncovered’ workshops

We will be providing an opportunity to observe a maths lesson in a range of year groups. These lessons will be a snapshot of how your child is being taught maths every day. Teachers will demonstrate the structure of a lesson and the sort of strategies and resources used. There will be opportunities to observe lessons in the following year groups:

  • Reception
  • Year 1
  • Year 2
  • Year 3 and 4
  • Year 5 and 6

We will be repeating these twice throughout the evening to give you the opportunity to see a range appropriate to you and your child. For example, if your child is in year 4 you may want to observe both a year 3/4 and 5/6 lesson. The first session will be from 6.00-6.20pm and the second session from 6.30-6.50pm.

As there will be limited numbers for each lesson, you will need to sign up to attend these through the Parentview website. Places must be booked in order to observe lessons.

Each child will be allocated a maximum of 2 places at the workshop lessons for their adults to sign up to. You can sign up to as few or as many as you wish. The ICT suite and North Hall will also be open with examples of Maths- No Problem videos and resources, for you to browse if you are not signed up to observe a lesson or whilst you are waiting for your allocated time slot.

This evening is for parents and carers only. Therefore, a crèche will be available which will be run by Saltdean staff. This is for children 3+ and will open at 5pm to allow you time to drop off your child and then head to the North Hall for the introductory talk. The crèche will close at 7pm. LIMITED SPACES!

Please note: The closing date to sign up to Parentview is Friday 8th February 2019

We hope to see as many of you there as possible!
